Device that pumps in-compressible fluids such as water, oils etc. is known as a pump. Pumps are to transfer water at high pressures and to circulate fluids in cycles. They are generally classified as Centrifugal Pumps and Positive Displacement Pumps.
With the help of the rotating vane impeller centrifugal pump produce a head and a flow by increasing the velocity of the liquid through the machine. By alternating filling a cavity and then displacing a given volume of liquid positive displacement pump operates. They deliver a constant volume of liquid for each cycle independent of discharge pressure or head. In the process industries—water, wastewater, oil and gas, food and beverage, chemical processing, mining, building services, pulp and paper—pumps are present and vary widely based on the needs.
Different types of vacuum pumps having a common function basically, that is to remove air, gases and vapour from a confined space and creating a vacuum in that given space. There are three types of vacuum pumps basically.
To create low vacuums Positive displacement vacuum pumps are used. They expand a cavity and allow the gases to flow out of the sealed environment or chamber and then the cavity is sealed and causes it to exhaust it to the atmosphere. The principle is to create a vacuum by expanding the volume of a container.
When gas molecules are accelerated from the vacuum side to the exhaust side in a vacuum pump it is known as momentum transfer pump. Based on the laws of fluid dynamics, matter flows differently at different pressures.
In the atmospheric pressure and mild volumes, the molecules interact with each other and push on their neighbouring molecules which are known as viscous flow. The molecules interact with the walls of the chamber instead of other molecules as the distance between the molecules increases. This stage is called high vacuum which is much more effective than positive displacement.
The momentum transfer vacuum pumps are further classified into two types of vacuum pumps – diffusion pump and turbomolecular pump. Both these types of pumps blow out gas molecules which are diffused into the pump. The main difference between these two types of pumps is that the diffusion pumps blow out molecules with jets of oil, whereas, turbomolecular pumps use high speed fans. They are usually placed inside the space or container to be vacuumed and using chemical reactions Entrapment pumps are known to perform more effectively.
A thin film created by the molecules in the air is removed by the entrapment pumps as they chemically react to the internal surfaces of the pump. Using cold temperatures they condense gases to a solid or absorbed state. Entrapment pumps are used along with positive displacement vacuum pumps and momentum transfer vacuum pumps to create ultra-high vacuum chambers. They are further classified into liquid ring vacuum pumps, single cone vacuum pumps, close couple vacuum pumps, two stage vacuum pumps, chemical process pumps and twin lobe roots blower.
The three basic types of pumps are positive-displacement, centrifugal and axial-flow pumps.
The various positive-displacement pumps are Rotary lobe pump, Progressive cavity pump, Rotary gear pump, Piston pump, Diaphragm pump, Screw pump, Gear pump and Hydraulic pump.
